Art for the "Non-Artist"

Don't Make a Masterpiece!

Let's be honest: the worst part about making art is worrying that it's going to suck. If your inner critic is a bit of a bully who keeps you from ever picking up a paintbrush, we have the perfect loophole for you. This month we’re playing around with ephemeral art: impermanent art for right NOW.

This can feel weird at first, but get in the flow and suddenly you forget the fear and self-judgment and find yourself lost in the process. Much like a runner’s high, you become absorbed in what you’re doing and forget to be critical of yourself. Your monster of an inner critic gets locked outside while you soak up the fun of creative exploration.

In addition to freeing us from judgment and expectations, ephemeral art is a lesson in non-attachment. You may end up loving what emerges in your creation or you may hate it. In either case, you won’t keep it. That's what the "ephemeral" part is about: it's fleeting.

This kind of art can be done with any medium, but we’re going to focus on nature and the outdoors. Materials are everywhere you look and there is no waste product - what you create will eventually be taken back by nature (so leave the glue and paint behind this time).

If you’re a stunted creative who lacks materials or the space to make art, this one is for you! Join us for a community art day at the beach where we will be inspired by whatever the waves have washed up and create either quietly in parallel or socially in collaboration (your choice). If beach art doesn’t speak to you or you’d rather try this on your own, check out the links below to get inspired. Make a chalk drawing, build a garden sculpture, make fairy houses in the woods, or paint with moss. When you’re done, and if you’re inspired, share photos of your art with us via our website, Pinterest, or Instagram
